Myriad Playout v5 features that are not supported or unavailable when running on Windows 7

Modified on Tue, 24 Sep at 12:56 PM

Introduction

As explained in the Operating System Support article, our recommended operating system is Windows 10, and whilst Myriad Playout v5 still works very well on Windows 7, there are several areas that may no longer work, or may work but with poor performance.

This is due to Windows 7 not having certain technologies that Myriad Playout is increasingly using to support new workloads and features.

Server OS Support: Windows Server 2016 or 2019 are also supported in certain scenarios although Server Operating Systems are optimised for Server performance, not usually for Playout. In general in this article, wherever Windows 10 is shown as supported, then Server 2016 or 2019 are also supported.

As the development of Myriad Playout continues, more features are likely to be added to this list, and there will reach a point where future releases will not even install on Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Features that are not supported under Windows 7

The following features are not supported under Windows 7 for Myriad Playout and related products from Myriad Playout v5.22 onwards.

This may be because the feature cannot work due to Windows 7 not having a technology that was introduced in later releases of Windows, or may be due to performance issues due to having to use older technologies - for example remote connections between Myriad components often rely on "Websockets" which are not available in Windows 7, to these connections have to fall-back on older methods and these are slower or sometimes less reliable.

Myriad Anywhere Cloud

Myriad Remote Edit Server connects to the Myriad Anywhere Cloud using the Myriad Anywhere Tunnel Service. This service is not available on Windows 7 because Remote Edit Server cannot use Websockets on Windows 7 to communicate with the remote users.

Myriad Remote Edit Server ('RES') when used with Myriad Anywhere

Myriad Remote Edit Server is currently supported running on Windows 7 for connections from the Myriad Remote Voice Tracking desktop application, however if you want to use Myriad Anywhere then Remote Edit Server is only supported on Windows 10.

If you are also wanting to use Myriad Anywhere Playout Remote, then the Studio PC's must also be running Windows 10.

Using Myriad Anywhere via Remote Edit server will not work correctly if either Myriad RES or Playout are running on Windows 7

Media OCP v5

Myriad OCP v5 is only supported running on Windows 10, and the Myriad Playout that is connecting to Myriad OCP v5 is only supported when running on Windows 10.

If you are running Windows 7 then you may experience performance issues so is not supported.

Broadcast Radio Encoder connections

The Broadcast Radio Encoder is only supported running on Windows 10, and the Myriad Playout that is connecting to Broadcast Radio Encoder to send metadata updates is only supported when running on Windows 10.

If you are running Windows 7 then you may experience performance issues so is not supported.

Media Engine Host

The Media Engine host is only supported running on Windows 10, and the Myriad Playout that is connecting to that Engine Host is only supported when running on Windows 10.

If you are running Windows 7 then you may experience performance issues so is not supported.

Smart Log Transfer

Smart Log Transfer is only supported when both computers are running on Windows 10.

If you are running Windows 7 then you may experience performance issues so is not supported.

Myriad Playout Remote

Myriad Playout Remote is only supported when Playout Remote AND Myriad Playout are both running on Windows 10.

If you are running Windows 7 then you may experience performance issues so is not supported.

SmoothStream Advanced Mode (introduced in Myriad Playout v5.23)

SmoothStream Advanced mode uses new codecs that are only available with Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 and newer. It is not supported and will likely cause reliability issues if used on older operating systems such as Windows 7

Connections to the Broadcast Radio Encoder

Broadcast Radio Encoder is only supported running on Windows 10, and Myriad Playout is only supported connecting to the Encoder when it is also running on Windows 10.
