Setting Up A Streaming Media Item (to play a stream in Myriad)

Modified on Thu, 14 Nov at 1:37 PM

In Myriad 5/6 you can create a Stream Media Item which will use a stream as the audio source whenever it is played by a Media Player.

Most Media Items will use a local audio file as the source but Streaming Media Items use a stream as the source for the audio whenever played. This could be a live stream, a presenter contribution stream or a file that is hosted on a streaming platform.

Uses include:

  • Taking live streams from external sources such as OB's and live events.
  • Playing a stream hosted file (such as news) that may be updated periodically by an external party.
  • Taking a live contribution stream from a presenter.

The simplest way to create a new Streaming Media Item is by following these steps:

  1. Right click on an empty Media Item and select Edit (or use any other method to open the Edit window for the target Media ID).
  2. On the Editor tab, click on the New Audio Stream button.

  3. In the Stream Location section, set the location of the stream you want to use.

    The options are:
    1. Stream URL -Set the specific location URL for your stream. (example - https://streaming.broadcast.radio/purgatory)
    2. Myriad System User Stream URL - Select a Myriad User and the system will use the Stream URL listed in their contact details.

  4. In the Stream Options section, set the Maximum Play Duration. Myriad will treat this like the Extro point on a standard audio Media Item and fade out the stream once the duration is reached.

In the example above, the duration has been set to 5 minutes so when this Media Item is dropped into a Media Player, the stream will play for 5 minutes after which it will be ejected from the Media Player.

  5. Finally, give the Media Item a suitable Title and any other information you wish to add to the Media Item.

  6. Save and close the Edit Window.

The Streaming Media Item can be used in the same way as any other Media Item on the Media Wall. If you drag it into a Media Player, the stream is connected but will not 'play' until you click on the Play button on the Media Player.

Once cued in a Media Player, the maximum duration is displayed as the Media Item duration.

Click on the Play button to start the stream. Technically, Myriad connects to the stream when the item is cued into a Media Player. When you click Play, the stream is un-muted.

As Streaming Media Items act the same as all other Media Items, you can use them in the following situations:

  • Manually drag into Media Players to play them.
  • Schedule them to play in the Log.
  • Attach them to Favorites for manual triggering (not recommended)
  • Include them in Pad lists.
  • Include them in List / Rotate / Random Media Items.
