Creating and Using Random Media Items in Myriad Playout 6

Modified on Fri, 11 Apr at 3:29 PM

Random Media Items offer an easy way to inject unpredictability and variety into your station’s output. Like rotating media items, they contain a list of other media items — but instead of playing the next one in sequence, they randomly choose from the list each time they’re triggered.

This makes them ideal for:

  • Jingles

  • IDs

  • Promo stabs

  • Quick-fire audio content

? Random vs. Rotating Media Items

TypePlayback Behavior
RotatingPlays the next item in a defined loop
RandomPlays one item at random from the list

? Rotating = structured cycle
? Random = flexible, unpredictable

A random item may repeat the same file back-to-back, but will not follow a set order.

? Creating a Random Media Item

  1. Select an empty media item on the Media Wall

  2. Click Edit

  3. Choose New Random Item from the media type options

  4. Click the Media Browser button

  5. Select and add the media items (e.g., jingles, tags, IDs) you want in your random pool

  6. Click OK

  7. Give the item a title

  8. Click Save

Your random media item is now ready to use.

▶️ Using a Random Media Item

You can:

  • Drag it into a player and trigger it manually

  • Add it to a favorite button (e.g., “Play a Jingle”)

  • Insert it into your scheduled log

Each time it plays, Myriad randomly picks one of the items in the list. Example:

  • Play 1: “This is Mel C - Your listening to Hot FM”

  • Play 2: “FM FM FM – You’re listening to Hot FM”

Because there’s no playback history tracking, the same item may play twice in a row.

? Editing or Converting a Random Item

To change the contents:

  1. Click Edit on the random media item

  2. Add, remove, or reorder media items as needed

  3. Click Save when done

Converting to a Rotating Item:

  • In the Edit Window, simply change the media item type from Random to Rotating or List Media Item using the Media Item Type option buttons in on the Editor tab

  • Or switch back to Random if needed

? Perfect if you start with a random pool and later want a fixed cycle!

✅ Summary

Random Media Items in Myriad Playout 6 provide a fun and flexible way to:

  • Introduce variety without scripting specific playback order

  • Reuse jingle libraries or IDs with minimal setup

  • Create dynamic buttons or slots in logs/favorites

You can update them any time, and even convert them to rotating lists as your needs evolve.
